British actress Tilda Swinton hit back at Quentin Tarantino's comments about the UK film industry at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival yesterday (12MAY04).

The Kill Bill director upset many Brits when he named America, India and Hong Kong as "the only three countries in the world with sustainable film industries".

He referred to famous Brits such as SIR Anthony Hopkins, Kate Beckinsale and Rupert Everett, who moved to Hollywood as soon as they hit the big-time, saying, "As soon as people become stars in Britain they get the hell out of there and go to Hollywood."

But the furious The Beach actress hit back, "No film culture can be based on only Hollywood imports.

"In Britain multiplexes outnumber art cinemas 10 to one. It's difficult for audiences to find a different sort of cinema and difficult for filmmakers and critics to think of making a different sort of cinema."
