Top Climber Praises Hannah For Tree-Top Skills
Movie star Daryl Hannah has won praise from climbing expert JOHN QUIGLEY for taking to the treetops during her recent farm protest in Los Angeles. The actress scaled a walnut tree on the South Central Farm site, which acted as a look-out and protest `tower' for conservationist and farmers attempting to keep the land from developers. She often slept on a platform high up in the tree during her 23-day protest, and always made sure she was there when needed. Environmentalist Quigley, who was also part of the protest, admits he trained Hannah and folk singer Joan Baez to make sure they were safe in the 40 foot high (12.2 meters) tree at all times. He admits he was most impressed when Hannah scaled the tree in a matter of minutes one morning - even though she had been ill the night before. He recalls, "On the morning the sheriff showed up, I spotted them (fellow protestors) and called out. "She (Hannah) was on the rope and up the tree in about three minutes. It was an amazing athletic feat." Hannah was eventually physically removed from the tree by firefighters on Tuesday (13JUN06) when they arrived with police officials to evict the protestors.
