The West Wing will hit US TV screens for a seventh season despite fears network NBC were ditching the show.

The West Wing has been a huge hit success since it first aired in 1999, winning numerous awards, but concerns for its future have mounted following fluctuating ratings in recent years.

However, NBC boss KEVIN REILLY is adamant the demand is great enough to warrant a new series, despite original star Martin Sheen's departure from the political drama.

Possible contenders to replace Sheen's US president JOSIAH 'JED' BARTLET include SENATOR ARNOLD VINICK, played by Alan Alda and Vice President ROBERT RUSSELL, played by Gary Cole.
