Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey was honoured by the UNITED NATIONS for her philanthropic efforts in education in New York on Thursday (30SEP04).

Winfrey helps students through her various charitable organisations: THE OPRAH WINFREY FOUNDATION, THE OPRAH WINFREY SCHOLARS PROGRAM and OPRAH'S ANGEL Network.

She says, "I really do feel that the real work of what I will do for the world's children, what I will do for education, what I can do for poverty, what I can do for children who are ravaged by AIDS; that work hasn't even started."

The billionaire spoke of her sorrow her cleaning-lady grandmother wasn't alive to see her success at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel as she picked up the 2004 Global Humanitarian Action Award.

Winfrey says, "My grandmother said, 'Oprah, I works for some good white folks, and if you mind yourself and act like you should, the Lord'll bless you with some good white folks.'

"I'm so sorry that she never lived to see that the Lord did bless me with some good white folks - working for ol' me."

During the bash - which was attended by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Michael Douglas and HILLARY CLINTON - Winfrey confessed she had to watch the presidential debate between George W Bush and John Kerry alone, because she is too verbal for watch it with others.

Winfrey admits, "I can't wait to put on my pyjamas and watch the debate. I'm one of those people who talk back to the TV."
