The Canadian actor passed away in New York City on Wednesday (15Apr15) after suffering a brain haemorrhage, according to his sister Carrie.

She tells CBC News, "He was funny, he was sweet, he loved acting, he loved comedy and singing and dancing. As a little kid, he just loved Broadway shows and all of that kind of stuff and would sing and dance in the living room. I think he was really proud of being Gilbert Blythe and was happy to answer any questions... he really enjoyed that series and was happy, very proud of it - we all were."

Crombie was best known for playing Gilbert Blythe in the classic Anne of Green Gables films, he also appeared in Slings & Arrows and voiced the stuffed animal in long-running children's show The Secret World of Benjamin Bear.

He also enjoyed various roles on Broadway and had a stint in The Drowsy Chaperone musical in 2008.

The actor's latest role was a guest spot in an episode of The Good Wife.
