The late Adam Yauch, of The Beastie Boys, has left one last 'Sabotage,' to anyone hoping to use his music for their own purposes. The rapper, who died of cancer aged 47, in May this year, has left instructions in his will to ensure that his music is not used in any advertising campaigns. Yauch's will was filed at Manhattan Surrogate court and was seen by Rolling Stone magazine. It reportedly read "In no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes" and was written in his own handwriting".
The right to handle Yauch's artistic property goes to his Widow, Dechen Yauch, who becomes the executor of his $6.4milion estate. The estate will be placed into trust for Dechen and their 13 year-old daughter, Tenzin Losel. This week, the surviving members of the group filed a lawsuit against the energy drinks company, Monster, over alleged copyright infringement, with the group claiming that the company used their music in some of its promotional material. It is not currently known what effect Yauch's will might make on the remaining members of the band.
It may transpire that Ad Rock and Mike D share the same views as Yauch, meaning that there will be no conflict in adhering to his wishes. It certainly seems, with the recent lawsuit, that the three were united in their views about their music being used for marketing purposes; we reckon they'll stick by Mca's wishes.
