Rock legends Aerosmith have been forced to call off a landmark concert in Venezuela after guitarist Joe Perry suffered a knee injury.

The Walk This Way stars were due to headline the Solid Fest event in Caracas on February 1st, in what would have been their first performance in the South American country.

But the legendary band have announced their withdrawal from the festival lineup after Perry, 58, underwent emergency surgery having suffered "unforeseen complications" caused by a previous operation on the same knee.

Perry - whose substance abuse issues in the 70s and 80s saw he and singer Steven Tyler dubbed the 'Toxic Twins' - had knee replacement surgery in March 2008, having delayed the operation for two years.

Tyler apologised for the quartet's cancellation and pledged to organise a Venezuelan show in the near future.

"Playing Venezuela was my idea of a perfect way to start the New Year", he said in a statement.

"But having heard Joe had to revisit the hospital this month, the band are truly disappointed we can't be in Caracas, and we hope to see everyone there soon."

Tyler was admitted to a rehabilitation facility last year, sparking fears that he may have fallen back into dangerous habits.

However, a statement released through his representatives later confirmed that he was admitted after a series of foot surgeries on his stage-hardened feet necessitated a recuperation period.
