African singer Chiwoniso Maraire has died at the age of 37.

Maraire passed away on Wednesday (24Jul13) after a 10-day stint at a hospital in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe.

Her manager Cosmas Zamangwe says, "She has been in hospital for the past 10 days suffering from chest pains. We are however still to ascertain the disease she was suffering from, but we suspect it is pneumonia".

The singer's passing comes just over a year after the death of her ex-husband Andy Brown, who also died from pneumonia in March 2012. They were parents to two children.

Maraire, the daughter of renowned Zimbabwean musician Dumisani Maraire, spent seven years of her childhood in the U.S. before returning to Africa.

She became one of Zimbabwe's best known singers, and was also famed for playing the mbira - a thumb piano - which is traditionally only used by men. She released four albums.
