Al Pacino To Play Phil Specter?
In one of the oddest casting decisions of this or any other year, HBO is planning to star Al Pacino in a biographical movie about record producer Phil Specter, who is currently serving a 19-years-to-life sentence for murdering actress Lana Clarkson, The New York Times reported on its website late Friday without citing sources. The pay-TV movie will be written and directed by David Mamet and exec-produced by Barry Levinson, the newspaper said. It did not provide further details -- whether, for Example, Pacino would portray Specter at a young age when he was producing his "wall of sound" hits or at middle age when he was working with the Beatles and speaking with a Liverpudlian accent. The Times observed that both Pacino and Specter are 70 years old and both have "an imposing stare." It noted that Pacino, Mamet and Levinson are all represented by International Creative Management (ICM). It quoted John L. Burnham, an ICM agent, as saying that Pacino "just saw a very interesting character to play, and he likes the sensibility of David and Barry."
