Alice Temperley advises celebrities wear an ''utterly different'' outfit on the red carpet in the lead up to the awards season.

The fashion designer - whose designs have been worn by stars such as model Heidi Klum and Britain's Duchess of Cambridge - believes the person is the ''statement'' rather than the dress they are wearing and has encouraged those who are in the spotlight to make sure they are ''comfortable'' with their final look before stepping out.

She explained: ''Just like with a wedding dress I would advise against going for something completely and utterly different in terms of silhouette or colour on the red carpet.

''You want people to see that it's you and make sure you are wearing the dress and not the other way around. I always think you shouldn't try and make a 'statement', if you are comfortable in what you are wearing you will look your best - and that is the only statement worth making.''

Alice, 37, also suggests female stars take advantage of their male dates' suit pockets at events rather than bulking up on accessories and admitted she prefers a ''minimalist'' look.

She added to GraziaDaily.co.uk: As far as accessories are concerned I think it is always best to be as minimalist as possible. If you can get away, do. You can always put your lipstick in your escort's pocket!

''Remember it's all about you and the dress. Nothing more, so keep the accessories very discreet.''
