Amazon, which operates a streaming video service that competes directly with Netflix, is, like its rival, getting into the business of producing original shows and offering them to its subscribers. After unveiling fourteen pilots online in April and asking for feedback, the Seattle-based company has selected five of them to go into production, including Alpha House, a political satire starring John Goodman created by Doonesbury's Garry Trudeau; Betas, about a group of young entrepreneurs who start a tech company; and three kids shows, Annebots, Creative Galaxy, and Tumbleaf, Each of the series is believed to have a budget substantially below those for Netflix's House of Cards and Arrested Development, which debuted recently. Alpha House has already drawn fire from the conservative Breitbart.com website. Does the country really need another show mocking the right, especially given the sorry state of the nation's top Democrat? it asked.
