The mother of singer Amy Winehouse has written an open letter to her daughter advising her to "stop, think and take stock" of her life.

Janis Winehouse, 52, has urged her troubled daughter to seek help from her family after the Rehab star cancelled her UK tour.

Amy's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, is currently on remand in Pentonville Prison having allegedly attempted to bribe a barman he is accused of attacking.

And though the singer received six Grammy nominations this week, her mother has urged her down to slow down, saying that "early fame has overwhelmed you, it's dizzied you and muddled your mind".

"For a moment, forget you're a superstar," she writes in the News of the World. "You're young and vulnerable, no stronger than any of the rest of us.

"Having to cancel your tour, as well, has been very sad.

"But maybe it will make you stop, think and take stock of where your life is going."

Janis also admits that Blake is not her "favourite person".

"Blake, your husband, might not be my favourite person, you know that, but he's your choice and I would never say anything about him to hurt you," she writes.

"When I was quoted recently as saying 'Thank God Blake's inside' what I meant was that putting him in jail might help him to clean up his act and change his life," she continues.

"It wasn't said out of viciousness or to upset you. If your relationship is meant to be, it will survive."

"But I want you to love Blake for who he is, Amy. Not because you feel sorry for him, or because he can get you doped up. Not for any other reason than that you have respect for him."

The "brilliant talent" that her mother writes of saw Amy rewarded this week with nominations in the best new artist, best record and song of the year categories at the Grammy Awards.
