Casting a harsh light on Hollywood's current strategy of focusing on films costing $100 million or more, After Earth, which reportedly cost $130 million to produce, opened in third place at the box office over the weekend with just $27.5 million, joining such other recent big-budget special-effects flops as John Carter, which opened with $30.2 million, and Battleship, with $25.5 million. The Sony film was run over by Universal's Fast & Furious 6, which held on to its first-place crown for the second week in a row with $35.2 million, and by the Lionsgate comedy Now You See Me, which debuted far ahead of predictions with $29.3 million. Fast & Furious roared ahead overseas as well, raking in $75 million, to bring its foreign total to $310.2 million and its worldwide gross to $481.2 million. After Earth is due to open overseas next weekend.
