'The Simpsons' writer Jon Vitti will pen the 'Angry Birds' movie.

The veteran animation screenwriter has been chosen to write the upcoming 3D cartoon feature based on the popular smart phone app.

The addictive game allows users to launch birds into the air using a virtual a catapult, knocking things over to achieve a maximum of points.

Emmy-award winning scribe Vitti has worked on the likes of 'The Office', 'The Larry Sanders Show' and 'King of the Hill' as writer and producer. He is best known for his work on 'The Simpsons' and 'The Simpsons Movie', as well as family film 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' and its sequel.

'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' executive producer Catherine Winder has also joined the production team, which already includes producer John Cohen ('Despicable Me') and executive producer David Maisel ('Iron Man'), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film project, in association with app developer Rovio Entertainment, follows the game's move into after a cartoon series which premiered in March. A cast and director have yet to be announced.

The animated tale will be distributed by Sony Pictures and is expected to be released on July 1, 2016.
