Anne Hathaway has opened up about the failure of her last relationship, insisting her urge to please her partner led to their break-up.
The Devil Wears Prada star refuses to name the former boyfriend in question but tells Harper's Bazaar magazine her "desperate" need for approval contributed to their split.
She explains, "There's something very addictive about people pleasing. It's a thought pattern and a habit that feels really, really good until it becomes desperate. It's one of the reasons that relationship ended. I wasn't able to grow or foster anything. I think a lot of girls have that story."
Hathaway admits she has since learned to make her own needs a priority: "It's a big moment when you step away from that and say, 'I'm going to be exactly who I am. And I'm going to be brave enough to only be with someone who wants me the way I am.'"
The actress left her longterm lover Raffaello Follieri after he was accused of fraud in 2008, and she's now dating actor Adam Shulman.
