Ant: 'Rotten Was The Real Punk Originator'
Rocker ADAM ANT insists former SEX PISTOLS frontman JOHNNY ROTTEN deserves more credit for kicking off the UK punk movement than rock svengali MALCOLM MCLAREN, despite MCLaren's boasts that he "invented" the genre. The STAND AND DELIVER star believes punk was essentially a working class phenomenon which was hijacked by the middle classes. And he claims that, while middle class MCLaren was a true pioneer, it was working class hero Rotten - real name JOHN LYDON - who pushed the movement forward. He tells London magazine Time Out, "There was a definite element of class tourism. "I enjoyed JULIEN TEMPLE's film THE GREAT ROCK 'N' ROLL SWINDLE, where Malcolm MCLaren tells us that he invented punk and used the Pistols as his puppets - but I think it was one of Malcolm's fantasies. "Malcolm was a great catalyst and deserves credit as an originator but, in John Rotten, he was dealing with a poet. "John put everything into action. He was an electric presence and completely authentic."
