Christy Lemire, the lead film critic for the Associated Press has quit, just days after AP colleague David Germain submitted his resignation. Their departures will leave numerous AP-affiliated newspapers that had dismissed their own film critics as part of overall cutbacks without any professional movie reviews unless Lemire and Germain can be replaced quickly. Lemire's resignation becomes effective on May 24, Germain's on May 17. Deadline.com reported today (Monday) that Lemire quit after managers began pressuring her to take on more of Germain's responsibilities after he resigned. On Friday she tweeted, Friends, wanted to tell you I've resigned from the AP after 15+ yrs, most as their film critic. It's been an honor but it's time to move on. In an interview with media blogger Jim Romanesko, Lemire said, I'm not sure if a fulltime critic is what they need. Lou Ferrara, AP managing editor for sports and entertainment told Romanesko that the two will be replaced. We will continue to cover movies and all of entertainment, he said.
