Drawing to a close four months of drought, the weekend box office fell 16 percent behind the comparable weekend a year ago. It was an apt ending to a period during which the box office slid 11.75 percent behind last year and when overall attendance dropped 11.53 percent. Somewhat ironically, the top film, Paramount's Pain and Gain, came in above most analysts' predictions with $20.4 million. Universal's Oblivion, which placed second, dropped a respectable 52 percent in its second week to $17.8 million. And Warner Bros.' 42 dropped just 40 percent in its third week to $10.66 million. In its sixth week Fox/Dreamworks Animation's The Croods fell a slight 27 percent to wind up with $6.7 million and bring its total for six weeks to $163.2 million, placing fifth. Indeed the only real disappointment (read: flop) on the list was Lionsgate's The Big Wedding, which opened in fourth place with $7.6 million.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):
1. Pain & Gain, Paramount, $20,244,505, (New); 2. Oblivion, Universal, $17,803,425, 2 Wks. ($65,090,925); 3. 42, Warner Bros., $10,657,443, 3 Wks. ($69,011,815); 4.
