Former American football star and actor OJ Simpson has been accused of "arrogance" and "ignorance" after seeing his bail amount doubled.

Mr Simpson, 60, who was present at the Clark County district court in Nevada for the hearing, was told he had violated the terms of his original bail by attempting to speak to a co-defendant in the armed robbery case.

The judge, Jackie Glass, was visibly angered as she handed down the decision to double Mr Simpson's bail to $250,000 (£127,000) - to which the defendant grimaced and said he understood.

After posting the new bond, Mr Simpson drove away from the court without acknowledging the massed ranks of the press and media gathered outside.

In explaining her decision, Judge Glass said: "I don't know, Mr Simpson, what the heck you were thinking - or maybe that's the problem, you weren't.

"I don't know if it's just arrogance. I don't know if it's ignorance.

"But you've been locked up at the Clark County detention centre since Friday because of arrogance or ignorance - or both."

Mr Simpson faces charges of kidnapping and armed robbery.

He was arrested last September after allegations he had been in a group that broke into a hotel room in Las Vegas and stole memorabilia from two individuals.

Mr Simpson denies the charges, with the trial due to begin on April 7th.
