Baseball legend Tony Gwynn has died at the age of 54.

The Hall of Fame member spent 20 seasons with the San Diego Padres, and played in the franchise's only two World Series.

He passed away on Monday (16Jun14) at Pomerado Hospital in Poway, California.

The current baseball coach at San Diego State University, Gwynn had been on medical leave since late March (14) as he recovered from cancer treatment.

A statement released by the Padres via Twitter.com reads: "We are terribly sad to say goodbye to our teammate, our friend and a legend, Tony Gwynn. Rest in peace, Mr. Padre."
