David Beckham - Beckham To Launch Soccer Fund If England's World Cup Bid Is Successful
David Beckham has vowed to launch a multi-million dollar global soccer fund if his bid to convince the sport's bosses to stage the 2018 World Cup in England is successful.
On Thursday (02Dec10), the superstar will try to persuade FIFA officials in Zurich, Switzerland to hold the tournament in the U.K. and he's promised to revolutionise the sport if England is successful.
In an article for Britain's Daily Mirror, he writes, "We've stressed that the effect of a World Cup in England could be felt for generations, both at home and abroad. We've made it clear we are committed to a 'World Cup for the World' with amazing legacy plans in place to reach one billion people across the globe.
"If successful, we plan to launch Football United, a multi-million pound global fund for football that would benefit every single country in the football world. It is something I believe in so strongly that I will take my David Beckham Academy to each of FIFA's six confederations at least once every year between now and 2018 if we win the bid."
The sporting ace has also praised newly-engaged Prince William and British Prime Minister David Cameron for their assistance in supporting England's bid to host the World Cup, insisting the trio will "fight" for their country at the Zurich hearing.
He adds, "The Prime Minister and Prince William have been magnificent every step of the way and they were at their most effective this week. I am honoured to be working with them and we have promised the nation we will fight right up until the last moment and do all we can to convince FIFA we have the best bid for football."
And Beckham is praying for England victory: "When FIFA president Sepp Blatter pulls the name of the hosts of the 2018 World Cup out of a sealed envelope, I hope we will be celebrating an English victory together. If we are, it will be one of the greatest moments of my career."
