Actor Ben Whishaw is set to play gadget-guru Q in the forthcoming James Bond movie 'Skyfall' - the first time the character has been portrayed as someone younger than Bond himself.
Whishaw's casting was first confirmed at the launch of Skyfall earlier this month, but it was unclear who the 31-year-old actor would play. However, according to the UK's Guardian newspaper, Ben will play the M16 stalwart known for delivering stern warnings to Bond after introducing each new gadget. The casting comes as somewhat of a surprise given the part is often played as a wise authoritarian, as with Desmond Llewelyn's 36 year stint in the role. Q has been absent from the franchise for years, though John Cleese played his assistant R in the 1999 flick The World is Not Enough and 2002's Die Another Day. Joining Whishaw in the Sam Mendes movie - the 23rd Bond film - is Javier Bardem as the villain, Noami Harris, Albert Finney and Ralph Fiennes. Elsewhere, Dame Judi Dench returns as chief spook M, while Berenice Marlohe will play 'Bond girl' Sabrine.
The role represents the biggest of Whishaw's career, although he will familiar to U.S. audiences after his turn in the acclaimed Red Riding series and the recent Bbc programme The Hour. He burst onto the scene in 2004, playing the lead in Trevor Nunn's production of Hamlet at the Old Vic.
