The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the frontrunner for the 2009 Oscars, having been nominated 13 times.

David Fincher's adaptation of the F Scott Fitzgerald short story about a man born with the body of an 80=year-old is named in the best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay categories.

Leading man Brad Pitt is nominated for the best actor award while Taraji P Henson is up for the best supporting actress prize.

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, the winner of four prizes at the Golden Globe awards earlier this month, could add to its list of accolades with ten nominations, including two in the best song category.

Boyle is up for his first best director prize, with Fincher, Stephen Daldry (The Reader), Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) and Gus Van Sant (Milk) also nominated.

Meryl Streep received her 15th Oscar nomination - in the best actress category - while a posthumous best supporting actor nomination for Heath Ledger was one of eight received by The Dark Knight.

Milk, Van Sant's biopic of influential gay politician Harvey Milk, also has eight nominations, while Pixar animated film Wall-E is named in six categories, including a surprise inclusion in the best original screenplay shortlist.

Shock nominations were few and far between, however, with the majority of the categories bearing great similarity to the Golden Globes and BAFTA shortlists.

However, critics and fans alike may have been surprised by Richard Jenkins' best actor nomination for The Visitor, the inclusion of Revolutionary Road's Michael Shannon in the best supporting actor category and Kate Winslet's best actress nomination for The Reader, rather than Revolutionary Road (for which she won the best actress Golden Globe).

The winners will be announced at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on February 22nd.

The most nominated films for the 81st Academy awards are:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 13
Slumdog Millionaire (pictured) - 10
The Dark Knight - 8
Milk - 8
Wall-E - 6
Doubt - 5
Frost/Nixon - 5
The Reader - 5
Changeling - 3
Revolutionary Road - 3
