Bernie Nolan - Bernie Nolan Turned Down Voice-saving Operation
Irish singer Bernie Nolan turned down the opportunity to undergo dangerous voice-saving surgery during her cancer battle.
The Nolans star revealed in October (12) that she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, just two years after doctors gave her the all-clear from breast cancer.
Nolan battled many horrific symptoms of the disease after it spread to her lungs, liver and bones but admits the toughest challenge was losing her singing voice three months ago.
The singer was offered the chance to have voice-saving surgery but was warned by doctors it could prove fatal so she chose to decline the operation and concentrate on her fight for survival.
In an excerpt from her new book, Now & Forever, published in Britain's Sunday Mirror, she writes, "Although I'm a very positive person, there's only so much you can take. I was losing my voice and no one seemed to understand how devastating that was. My life has been blessed by music... (Music) has never let me down.
"An operation was possible but it would be an extremely dangerous procedure and could even prove fatal. (So) 'Sod it!' I thought, 'I'm trying to stay alive here, I'm not risking surgery that could kill me.'"
