The Black Eyed Peas have reached out to fans online and apologised for scrapping a charity concert in New York on Thursday (09Jun11).
The I Gotta Feeling hitmakers were scheduled to host a star-studded show in the city's famed Central Park with performances from Taylor Swift, Natasha Bedingfield, LL Cool J, Debbie Harry and Tony Bennett, and appearances from Whoopi Goldberg, Zach Braff and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Sweltering temperatures caused organisers to delay the start of the Concert 4 Nyc by more than two hours due to safety fears, but a sudden downpour, coupled with thunder and lightening, prompted officials to scrap the show altogether.
Before the cancellation announcement, rapper Taboo remained defiant, insisting he wanted to press on with the gig.
In a post on his Twitter.com blog, he wrote, "Let's do this already I am not scared of lightning I just don't want to get electrocuted on stage cause we got (sic) a lot of electrical work."
After gig organisers declared it was too risky to hold the show, Taboo took to his social networking page again to relay a message from frontwoman Fergie.
He states, "Fergie is really sorry it (the concert) is not happening we feel horrible.. We are devastated and Fergie told me to tweet this she loves u (sic) all."
But it wasn't all lost for the band - they tried to entertain drenched event workers by staging an impromptu mini-performance backstage.
Posting a photo of the small crowd online, will.i.am tweeted, "I'm so sad the show got postponed... It was supposed to be 80 thousand...but we are having a intimate show with 80 people back stage."
The gig was due to raise funds for the Robin Hood Foundation, a charity aimed at tackling poverty in the Big Apple.
Organisers have yet to decide if the event will be rescheduled.
