Bo Diddley Honoured In Florida
Officials in Gainesville, Florida have paid tribute to Bo Diddley by naming the city's central plaza after the late music legend.
Diddley, a longtime Florida resident, died last year (08) at the age of 79 following heart failure.
And now local government executives have unveiled a permanent honour to the star - erecting a mural and renaming the downtown space the Bo Diddley Community Plaza.
Diddley lived in the town of Archer, several miles away from Gainesville, and played at the city's plaza in 2006.
The renaming ceremony took place on Friday (05Jun09) and was attended by the late star's grandson, Garry Mitchell, who thanked the people of Gainesville for the tribute.
He told the crowd, "Gainesville's been really good to my granddad. Thank you for your encouragement and your prayers. Long live rock and roll!"
Diddley's family subsequently unveiled the star's tombstone in the town of Bronson, southwest of Gainesville, on Sunday morning (07Jun09).
