The anticipation of Bobby Womack 's first new studio album in 13 years has all of a sudden been thrown into sharp relief following news that the soul legend has been diagnosed with colon cancer, reports the UK's Guardian. The news was broken by bassist and Womack's good friend Bootsy Collins on Facebook, with the musician expressing that his pal was holding up well in spite of the news.
"He is Fighting Pneumonia in the Hospital Now," Collins wrote last Saturday on the social networking site, adding "Will Update After I talk to Him." On Sunday however the situation had worsened and he explained "I JUST SPOKE TO OUR FRIEND Bobby Womack. He Wanted You All to Know That He Loves You & Thxs for the Prayers. Docs Says He Is In 1st Stage of Colon Cancer, He is Very Up Beat About His Future, we laughed & joked before we hung up."
After starting his musical career in The Valentinos, Womack broke through as a solo artist in the late 60s and early 70s, gaining his first US top 40 single with the hit 'That's The Way I Feel About Cha.' His highest charting album was 1981's 'The Poet' which reached 29 in the US chart, whilst he gained a whole new generation of fans recently by appearing on Gorillaz album 'Plastic Beach' in 2010, most notably on the single 'Stylo.'
