Bosnian actor Nazif Mujic has spoken out about his bid for political asylum in Germany, insisting he would rather hang himself than go back to his homeland.

The 2013 Silver Bear Best Actor winner at the Berlin Film Festival returned to the German capital in November (13) with his wife Senada and their three young children and applied for permission to make the city their home, but his efforts were denied by immigration authorities and the family is due to be deported in March (14).

Mujic reached out to Berlin Film Festival organisers for help and they have been raising money to aid his legal troubles.

And, as this year's (14) festival gets underway, Mujic has taken his asylum bid international by staging a press conference on Friday (07Feb14).

He told the media, "I don't want to be rich. I just want an ordinary job, a chance to feed my family."

The actor won his Silver Bear honour for portraying himself in Danis Tanovic's An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker.

He claims the film cost him his job and he has been ostracised in Bosnia because of his gypsy roots, revealing he and his wife were turned away from hospitals after she suffered a miscarriage.

He said, "We couldn't even buy food."

Mujic's lawyer has filed a petition to grant him residency status, which is currently under review, and he insists that if his asylum bid is refused he will seek help from other nations.

He adds, "Bosnia betrayed me. I will not go back. I would rather hang myself."
