The fourth iteration of Sony/Screen Gems's Resident Evil franchise wound up with $26.68 million over the weekend, according to final box office figures released on Monday. The figure was about $1 million lower than the studio's $27.7 million estimate on Sunday. After opening with $10.74 million on Friday, then raking in another $9.81 million on Saturday, Resident Evil Afterlife plunged to $6.10 million on Sunday. Several other films came in below their already low estimates, and while the weekend following the Labor Day holiday often marks the slowest day of the year at the box office, this one was the lowest since 2006. Sony/Screen Gems also had the No. 2 film, Takers , which finished with $5.68 million, just $1,371 ahead of the third-place film, Focus Features' The American . There were several other close finishers, as most of the remaining films in the top ten were separated by less than $100,000 between each of them.
