Box Office Needs Help; The Help Doesn't

Summer may not be officially over, but it is so far as the box office is concerned. The top twelve films together earned only $106.4 million over the weekend, off 3.5 percent from a year ago, when the second week of The Expendables led with $17 million. This weekend's leader, The Help , performed better than that, earning $20.02 million. But four new movies were seemingly allowed to escape, each of them receiving dismal reviews and performing equally dismally at the box office. Three of them were in 3D, but the 3D surcharges didn't help and may in fact have driven away a significant number of moviegoers who might have gone to see them if it weren't for the inflated 3D pricing. Spy Kids 4 All the Time in the World led the quartet with $11.6 million, followed by Conan the Barbarian with $10 million. Fright Night performed well below expectations with just $8.1 million, and One Day was screened to nearly empty seats, earning just $5.08 million.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1. The Help , Disney, $20,018,659, 2 Wks. ($71,340,829); 2. Rise of the Planet Of The Apes , 20th Century Fox, $16,119,502, 3 Wks. ($133,583,862); 3. Spy Kids All The Time in the World , Weinstein Co. $11,644,672, (New); 4.
