Box Office Slump Continues

The virtually uninterrupted downtrend in ticket sales this year was extended once again as total receipts this weekend fell more than 13 percent behind last year's for the comparable week. The top moneymaker was Battle Los Angeles , with $35. million, but that was just a little more half what Disney's Alice in Wonderland earned in its second week a year ago ($63 million). The box office also saw one of its biggest flops ever -- and certainly the biggest since the 3D revival. IMAX and 3D surcharges did nothing to save Mars Needs Moms , which cost $150 million to make, but which, in its opening weekend, took in just $6.91 million. (Talk about alien disaster movies!) Disney, which released the film, did get a bit of good news about another third-party-produced film that it is distributing -- Rango. That film earned $23 million in its second week, off a modest 41 percent, to bring its ten-day total to $68 million. The results for Warner Bros.' Red Riding Hood however, could send a silver bullet into the heart of werewolf movies -- they have rarely done well -- as it opened with just $14 million. It cost a reported $42 million to produce.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1. Battle Los Angeles, Sony, $35,573,187, (New); 2. Rango , Paramount, $22,602,847, 2 Wks. ($68,206,101); 3. Red Riding Hood, Warner Bros., $14,005,335, (New); 4. The Adjustment Bureau, Universal, $11,597,335, 2 Wks. ($38,589,595); 5. Mars Needs Moms, Disney, $6,914,488, (New); 6. Beastly, CBS Films, $5,021,232, 2 Wks. ($16,911,633); 7. Hall Pass, Warner Bros., $5,011,020, 3 Wks. ($34,842,289); 8. Just Go With It , Sony, $4,019,266, 5 Wks. ($94,000,847); 9. Gnomeo & Juliet, Disney, $3,617,255, 5 Wks. ($89,102,365); 10. The King's Speech, The Weinstein Co. $3,573,112, 16 Wks. ($129,010,235).
