Brandon Flowers thanked English bands for shaping The Killers' sound as he was named Q Icon today (22.10.12).

The US singer received the trophy at the Q Awards 2012 - an annual ceremony held by music magazine Q - in London this afternoon, and says it means so much because his band have so many influences who hail from the UK.

He told BANG Showbiz: ''It means a lot to win, being from across the ocean it means maybe more to me than to some of the people who are from here. All the bands who shaped us when we were growing up were from here, so I'm thankful.

''Part of our DNA is from the UK, well our musical DNA, we've listened to these bands our whole lives so it just comes out in some weird way, funnelled through Las Vegas, you guys recognise it and like it.''

Brandon was also carrying another Q Award with a skull necklace hanging off it, which he explained had been handed over belatedly.

He said: ''I've got two awards, I got one for Best Video from 2006, it's a little late! I guess Tim Burton's been hanging on to it for us, or that's the idea, he accepted it for us six years ago.''

The star studded ceremony also saw Blur triumph as they were named Best Live Act. Emeli Sande received Best Solo Artist, while Muse took home Best Act in the World Today.

Rapper Plan B - who turns 29 today - won Best Track for his single 'ill Manors'. Meanwhile, reformed group Pulp took home the Q Inspiration Award while dance duo Underworld were given the Q Innovation in Sound prize for their work on the music for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London, held this summer.
