Revered actor Sidney Poitier is to be handed a bridge honour in the Bahamas.

Poitier, who became the first African American to win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1964 for his role in Lilies of the Field, spent much of his childhood on Cat Island, a small piece of land which makes up the nation to the east of Florida.

And, as a tribute to the 80 year old, Prime Minister Perry Christie will rename the Paradise Island Bridge in his honour during a special ceremony next month (Nov12), when the country marks its 40th anniversary as an independent state.
