Adele has wasted no time in apologizing for her middle-finger salute at the Brit Awards in London on Tuesday evening (21 February, 2012), claiming she was aiming the gesture at the "suits" and not her fans, according to the UK's Daily Mirror.
The Londoner's acceptance speech for the Best British Album prize was cut-short when producers instructed host James Corden to introduce rockers Blur, who were closing the show. Standing in disbelief, Adele asked "are you going to cut me off", with Corden replying, "I'm so so sorry, I can't believe I'm going to do this". The songstress reluctantly began making her way off stage, before giving a middle-finger salute. The Gavin and Stacey actor - who had hitherto done a solid job of hosting the show - was visibly upset when recalling the incident backstage. However, speaking at the post-awards press conference, Adele played down speculation her middle finger was intended for Corden or indeed her fans, saying, "Can I just say sorry for swearing? I flung the middle finger at the suits, not the fans, I want people to know that. Sorry if I offended anyone, but the people in suits offended me. I wasn't swearing at the fans, but I didn't get to complete my thank you speech!".
As for her awards success - which came just a week after she scooped six Grammys - Adele said, "It all goes over my head really, I don't really realise it. It's phenomenal. It seems to have done it all on its own. The record carried on walking while my voice was bad, it's amazing". The singer had performed her smash-hit single 'Rolling in the Deep' earlier in the night and although some users on Twitter had suggested she still sounded out-of-sorts, she received a standing ovation at the O2 Arena.
