Katy Perry has been earmarked to star in a forthcoming film about the Britain's Got Talent champion Paul Potts, the New York Post has reported. The movie mogul Harvey Weinstein will be backing the movie and has explained how he chatted to the blue-haired pop star in New York last month (February 2012) about the possibility of taking on the role.

Paul Potts is the 41 year-old opera singer whose path to fame took him from the Carphone Warehouse, to performing for the Queen, via Britain's Got Talent. His performances on Britain's Got Talent quickly became an online sensation; his first audition on the show has been viewed on YouTube over 150,000 times. He wowed the show's judges (Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan) in 2007 and by 2009 he was reported to have been worth around £5 million. Now, with Weinstein giving the movie the thumbs up, the hunt is on for the leading lady. Weinstein reportedly said "I was talking to Katy about a new project, a possible dramatic role in the Paul Potts movie, which will be shooting in England soon."

Weinstein and Perry had been spotted chatting at New York's Soho House at a pre-Oscars party and added: "We'd really like someone like Katy or Adele to play the role of Potts' wife, and Katy seemed genuinely interested." Paul Potts married his wife Julie-Ann Cooper after meeting her online in 2001. He often attributes his success to the fact that she stuck by him when he was pursuing his dream of becoming an opera singer.
