British Director Clive Donner Dead At 84
Director Clive Donner, whose films included The Caretaker, Nothing but the Best, and What's New Pussycat? has died in London at age 84. In its obituary, The New York Times observed that Donner got his start as a director to be reckoned with in 1963 with the film version of Harold Pinter's play The Caretaker, starring Alan Bates, Donald Pleasence and Robert Shaw. But when he couldn't come up with financing, a "group of well-wishers" who included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Peter Sellers and Noël Coward, put up the money. But while his films achieved much success in the 1960s, his later work, the Times noted, turned out to be disappointing.
