Sir Denis Forman, the British Tv executive behind beloved drama Coronation Street's success, has died, aged 95.

The former Granada Tv chairman was responsible for bringing programmes such as Coronation Street to the small screen as one of the network's founding executives.

He served as chairman from 1974 to 1987 and also oversaw hit shows like The Jewel in the Crown and Brideshead Revisited.

Forman turned to the film and Tv industry after losing a leg during the Battle of Cassino in Italy in Word War Ii.

He served as the British Film Institute's chief production officer in the late 1940s and joined Granada Tv at its launch in 1956.

One of his three memoirs was turned into 1999 film My Life So Far, starring Colin Firth.

Sir Denis also served as the deputy chairman of the Royal Opera House from 1983 to 1991.
