The son of Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks has been offered a plea deal as part of the murder case relating to the death of his fashion designer girlfriend last year (10).
Nicholas Brooks, whose famous father committed suicide last month (May11), pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge after the body of Sylvie Cachay was found in an overflowing bathtub in a New York hotel room in December (10).
The case was heard by a judge at Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday (21Jun11) when Justice Bonnie Wittner confirmed the defendant is considering a plea deal. The hearing was postponed until September (11) to allow time for a decision to be made.
Cachay family lawyer Susan Karten tells the New York Post, "All we know is that there are ongoing plea discussions. But on the next court date, either they have a plea in place or they get ready to start a trial."
Brooks' father, the composer who wrote hit track You Light Up My Life, was found dead at his New York home in May (11) and his death was subsequently ruled a suicide. At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial over allegations he lured women to his apartment and sexually assaulted them. He pleaded not guilty to a number of charges in 2009.
