Cairo Film Festival Gala Cancelled As Violence Erupts In Egypt
The closing ceremony of Egypt's Cairo International Film Festival was cancelled on Thursday (06Dec12) due to ongoing political unrest in the country.
The 35th annual movie event launched last month (Nov12), but as protests against Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, grow more violent, organisers of the festival decided to axe the official prizegiving.
In lieu of a ceremony, the winners were announced at a press conference.
Prizes went to Venezuelan star Vanessa Di Quattro (Best Actress) and Polish Marian Dziedziel (Best Actor), while French drama Rendez-vous a Kiruna won the Best Film award.
The festival previously hit headlines when several prominent Egyptian filmmakers boycotted the event in their own protest again President Morsi.
