Cameron And Weaver Join Sting In Fight Against Brazilian Dam

James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver have joined Sting's fight to stop Brazilian authorities building a controversial hydro-electric dam in the Amazon rainforest.
Sting held a press conference in the country last year (09) to condemn the proposals for the megastructure, known as the Belo Monte project, which will be the third largest dam of its kind in the world.
The rocker claimed the project, which will flood large areas of the region, will have a damaging affect on the Amazon's indigenous population, as well as destroying the habitat of many rare animals.
And now Cameron and Weaver have lent their support to the campaign - the Avatar moviemaker addressed the Brazilian media on Monday (12Apr10) with the actress by his side, and urged President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to stop construction on the dam.
He said, "I would challenge him to be a hero (by halting work on the project). Huge dams are a 20th century idea in the 21st century: it's a dinosaur's idea. (The dam) is going to be an ecological disaster."
The pair also helped raised awareness of environmental issues by planting a tree in Sao Paulo's Ibirapuera Park on Sunday (11Apr10) - it marked the first of one million saplings which will be planted in 15 countries worldwide through a partnership between Hollywood studio Twentieth Century Fox and the Earth Day Network.
