Cannes Names U.s. Film To Open Festival
The Cannes Film Festival has selected Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom as its opening film on May 16. The film once again unites Anderson with Bill Murray who appeared notably in Anderson's Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Fantastic Mr. Fox . It also features an impressive cast that includes Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. In its announcement of the opening-film selection, the festival quoted its artistic director, Thierry Frémaux, as calling Anderson "one of The Rising powers of American cinema." Festival President Gilles Jacob added, "With Wes Anderson opening the 65th Festival de Cannes, young American cinema will be celebrated on the Croisette." Last year the festival opened with a film from an older member of American cinema -- Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris .
