Carey Mulligan is set to star in new movie 'Shame'.

The British actress has reportedly signed up to appear in the Steve McQueen-directed project, which will see Michael Fassbender in the lead role.

The movie tells the story of Brandon (Fassbender), a 30-somehting New Yorker, who is struggling with sex addiction so reaches out to his family and co-workers for help.

Mulligan is being lined up to play Sissy, Brandon's troubled sister, while James Badge Dale is in line for the role of Brandon's boss.

The movie - which has been written by McQueen and Abi Morgan - will start shooting in New York for six weeks in January.

As well as being lined up for 'Shame', Mulligan - who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 'An Education' - recently won the lead role in Baz Luhrmann's version of the 'The Great Gatsby'.

The 'Moulin Rouge' director cast Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan in his forthcoming adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, and told her while she was on the red carpet at The Fashion Council Awards in New York.

According to reports, the 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' star burst into tears upon being told the news, which came to her on her mobile phone.

Luhrmann said: "However, specific to this particular production of 'The Great Gatsby', I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: 'Hello, Daisy Buchanan.' "
