Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen was the toast of Japan's version of the MTV Video Music Awards on Saturday (22Jun13), picking up the coveted Best New Artist trophy at a ceremony in Chiba.

The singer was presented with the prize for her breakthrough single Call Me Maybe, seeing off competition from rival nominees including One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful and We Are Young by fun.

Jepsen gave her boyfriend Matthew Koma a kiss before heading onstage to accept her accolade, and drew cheers as she thanked the crowd in Japanese.

She added, "Thank you to (my manager) Scooter Braun, (mentor) Justin Bieber and all of my fans. Thank you so much, this is for you, I love you! And my hot date over there, thank you so much!"

Jepsen later performed Call Me Maybe live with Japanese girl group Momoiro Clover Z.
