Carrie Fisher's father Eddie Fisher has passed away at the age of 82.

The 'Star Wars' actress' legendary musician dad - who was once married to Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor - died at his home in Berkeley, California, late on Wednesday evening (22.09.10) after suffering from complications which arose after a recent hip operation.

His family said in a statement: "Late Wednesday evening, the world lost a true American icon. He was an extraordinary talent and a true mensch.

"He was loved and will be missed by his four children: Carrie, Todd, Joely and Tricia Leigh, as well as his six grandchildren."

A mensch is a Yiddish word meaning a person of integrity and honour.

The late singer - who was responsible for a string of hits, including 'Thinking Of You' and 'Wish You Were Here' - was married five times during his Lifetime, first to actress-and-singer Debbie Reynolds, followed by Elizabeth, actress Connie Stevens, beauty Queen Terry Richard and finally, Chinese-born businesswoman Betty Lin, who died in 2001.

In the past, Eddie's eldest daughter Carrie has likened his relationships with her mother Debbie and Elizabeth to the modern-day love triangle between Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston.
