Cate Blanchett took her children onto the set of the 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'.

The Oscar-winning actress brought her three boys Dashiell, 11, Roman, eight, and four-year-old Ignatius with her during the shooting of the fantasy film in New Zealand and says her children were enchanted by Sir Peter Jackson's impressive set pieces.

Speaking on British talk show 'Lorraine', Cate - who reprised her 'Lord of the Rings' role as Elf ruler Galadriel in the movie - explained: ''They're getting to the point where they're not so portable and they choose to do less so it's been great to be with them. It's a pretty exciting place backstage on a film set, especially when you're young.

''I flew over for eight days and the boys came with me and it was wonderful for them to see the film set. They were so excited because they saw the 3D cameras ... they saw all the stunt guys and saw how things are put together.''

Cate and her husband Andrew Upton are full-time artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company, so the statuesque 43-year-old beauty confessed filming the 'Lord of the Rings' prequel was a welcome break from her daily responsibilities.

She laughed: ''My husband and I run a theatre company and that's been our focus so it was nice to escape for eight days to do this project. I haven't made a film for quite a long time.''

Cate attended 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' royal premiere in London's Leicester Square on Wednesday night (12.12.12) and she was joined on the special green carpet by her co-stars Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis and James Nesbitt as well as director Sir Peter Jackson and Prince William.
