Veteran rock singer Rod Stewart has been honoured for his services to music by the Queen with a CBE.

The 61-year-old is among those in the entertainment world named in today's New Year honours list, with actors Hugh Laurie and Johnny Briggs collecting and OBE and MBE respectively.

Stewart's 40-year career has seen him score six number ones and more than 60 top-40 hits, but in the mid-1970s he applied for US citizenship in a tax row with the British authorities.

"It's a great honour and I'm overjoyed. Although I'm living in California, I'm very proud to be British," he said.

"We will be celebrating the good news later today," said the singer, who is engaged to model Penny Lancaster.

The honours list also sees a knighthood for blind jazz pianist George Shearing, while deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie is made a dame.

OBE recipient Laurie has enjoyed a new lease of fame on both sides of the Atlantic with surprise US hit House, while Briggs left popular soap Coronation Street earlier this year after more than 30 years on the show.

Among other celebrities honoured is The Good Life actress Penelope Keith, who has been awarded a CBE.
