Ordinarily rival TV networks give the season finale of Fox's American Idol a wide berth -- as wide a one as they give the Super Bowl or the Oscars. But this year, CBS will be putting up its top-rated comedy, The Big Bang Theory opposite Idol -- or, at any rate, a half hour of Idol -- on May 16, a Thursday night. It's another sign that the networks see weakness in the Idol franchise, commented Orlando Sentinel TV columnist Hal Boedeker. CBS is hedging its bet against Idol's apparent breakdown by scheduling the season closers of its other Thursday-night hits, Two and a Half Men and Person of Interest, a week earlier, on May 9. But CBS is apparently also not reluctant to pit the season finale of its powerhouse drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation against the first half of the Idol finale on Wednesday, May 15.
