Tom Hanks - Censors Hack 40 Minutes Off Cloud Atlas
The film debuted in Beijing on Monday (21Jan13) with a 130-minute running time, much shorter than the original 169-minute version that was released worldwide.
Directors Tom Tykwer and Lana and Andy Wachowski were not involved in the editing decisions but speaking to local press, they acknowledged the "constraints" of releasing Cloud Atlas in China, where there are strict censorship regulations.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, steamy love scenes were taken out of the film, which opens across China on 31 January (13).
It is the second Hollywood movie to be altered by Chinese censors in 2013 - Skyfall had a crucial scene axed, and subtitles in the James Bond blockbuster were altered to remove references to torture and prostitution in the Far East country.
