The estranged wife of disgraced American football star Chad Johnson has broken her silence about their alleged bust-up last month (Aug12), insisting the decision to walk away from her husband was "the hardest thing in the world".
The wide receiver, formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, was arrested for domestic violence on 11 August (12) following an alleged altercation with his wife Evelyn Lozada. She received six stitches to her forehead after he reportedly headbutted her at their Florida home.
The incident prompted Lozada to file for divorce after just six weeks of marriage and it also cost Johnson his spot on the Miami Dolphins team and a handful of lucrative endorsement deals. The couple's joint reality TV show, Ev and Ocho, was also axed.
After struggling to pick up the pieces, Lozada has now opened up about what sparked the fight, claiming Johnson grew angry when she confronted him about finding a receipt for a box condoms, purchased three weeks after their July (12) wedding, in his car.
The sports ace denied cheating on his bride, however, her suspicions reportedly sent him over the edge - during a recent interview with U.S. news show Nightline, she said, "I knew that he was lying and I told him, 'I'm not sticking by you through this, I don't care if my marriage is the laughing stock of the world,' and then the next thing I know... he headbutted me.
"I felt blood coming down my face... and I looked at him and I said, 'You just headbutted me...?' Everything just felt (as) if it was in slow motion."
And while the 36 year old reality TV star admits she still loves Johnson, she forced herself to end their relationship out of concerns for her safety.
Fighting back tears, she added, "It's the hardest thing in the world to walk away from someone that you really love. But you have to walk away because I have to protect myself."
