Chaka Khan - Chaka Khan To Be Honoured With Own Day In Hometown
Soul icon Chaka Khan is set to be honoured with her own day in her native Chicago, Illinois.
The I'm Every Woman hitmaker will be celebrated by members of the community on 28 July (13), which has been declared Chaka Khan Day, before taking to the stage to perform a free outdoor concert to commemorate the occasion in Millennium Park.
Local city officials and Mayor Rahm Emanuel will also unveil a street sign in her name near her former high school, and the Grammy winner insists she's delighted to be recognised in her hometown.
She says, "Chicago is where it all began for me. Even before (joining the band) Rufus, I sang with local groups such as The Babysitters, Lock and Chain and Lyfe. As a young girl, growing up on Carpenter Street, my parents introduced me to a very rich musical foundation - starting with jazz and opera.
"I owe this city so much, and I'm deeply honoured by this tribute. Chicago will always be a part of me, and with this street naming, I now will always be a part of it. It's a blessing to me and my family. We are profoundly grateful to all the people of Chicago."
